Mrs. Hill

Cory and I played Math Bingo, an app we downloaded for my iPod Touch! I'd say that he knows his basic addition facts that add up to numbers 10 and under. He loves to figure out anything with numbers!

Camden loves the website starfall.com. Even though it's about letters and reading, he enjoys counting the letters or animals/objects that fly across the screen. He is counting from 1 to 10 now and then skips to 20, 40, 80, 90, 100! It's really cute!

I paid the bills for our family online and planned a summer budget! See, math skills are still very much needed, even as an adult!

Adding up the $

I will tell you that this week in Destin, my sharp math skills came into play:
  • Figuring 20% of the restaurant bill in order to tip the server
  • Changing our watches to reflect the time in Florida (they are one hour behind us, therefore they are on Central time)
  • Adding up the $ we spent for each activity ($65 to waverun for 1/2 hour;--yikes!)
  • Separating the litter that Cory, Brennan, and I picked up from the beach one morning--we discussed reasons for littering, how it would affect the animals in the ocean, and prevention.
  • The number of Dt. Coke cans we all accummlated during the week.
  • Whether $3.96 was a good deal for milk compared the Wal-Mart price of $2.96--was it worth the drive to Wal-Mart to save the $1?
What have you done lately to keep your math skills fresh?

Mrs. Hill works on some math. . .

Cory and I played the game "1, 2, 3 Go Diego, Go" today and counted the number of animals on each of the cards. We also counted by twos, fives, and tens up to 20. We then used the numbers on the back of the cards to make two digit numbers (ex. 25) and three digit numbers (ex.125)!

Camden and I counted his fingers and toes today. He has learned to make "two" and "three"with his fingers! He counted to 12 while I videotaped him with my new little camcorder.

We are also counting down the days (with Camden) and the hours (with Cory) until we leave for Destin, FL. on Friday!

MRS. HILL SAYS "PLEASE PRACTICE!"

You MUST know your math facts (all of them: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing) by the beginning of fifth grade! We will do monthly timed tests (for a grade). Our first timed test will be within the first two weeks of school. Should individual students score below 90% for any of the timed tests, each student will spend recess time practicing the facts with Mrs. Hill. This is a fifth grade wide requirement and will ONLY benefit your other math skill development.

So, choose a day of the week and practice one type of math fact that day and the other math facts the other days! YOU are in charge of your learning!
